It’s funny that you say there isn’t sexism in the marketing of music when your argument is, for the most part, based on a male point of view.
Your main argument: Men don’t really care about female artists who dress provocatively (Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Rihanna, etc) because men aren’t buying their music. I don’t dispute this. But does it make it any less sexist? No.
What about women, especially young girls, who buy their music?
When popular (mainstream) artists like Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Beyonce, Shakira, Fergie do nothing but show off their asses in videos, what kind of message do you think it sends to women?
I agree (about the point about good music/bad music and choices). Truth is- there are options and choices. Us 30 somethings get caught in the lamenting… no good music, blah, blah blah. It’s a tired excuse. Because we have choices. Choices for the music we listen to, the films we watch, the media we indulge in and importantly how we spend our time.
If we are seekers, we will find that there are many great options out there and life has great things to offer. If we stay wallowing in the negative, we will never grow and be happy.
Just my 2 cents…Keep up the Great Work.
As far as sexism in music, there’s racism, sexism & homobhobia in any & all industries. Most music big wigs (and this includes in hip hop) are white males, so all kinds of folks have to push to make their way.
And yes women do have it harder in the sense of financially making it, as do black men. The lady singers you mentioned may have grace & appeal but most folks have not heard of them & I’m sure their bank accounts are no where near Beyonce’s. I’m not saying the more soulful & demure artists don’t count… I’m merely pointing out in terms of the all mighty dollah, theres a difference. Just like many Black men who come out sounding like gentlemen with their raps don’t make as much or are as known as Kanye, Jay Z and such.
That’s why your show is so important. Because folks need exposure to music that is more than just about men acting like thugs & women like hos. We need to feel something good and do more than just feed some rich white big wigs pocket based on stereotypes.
Where your words fail on this podcast, luckily your tracks back up the real message. Keep up the good work!
